Recipe Ingredients

You’ll need the following ingredients to make this amazing French Toast Recipe:

  • Bread – I think the best bread to make good French toast is thick white bread.
  • Eggs- Let them come to room temperature
  • Whole Milk
  • Granulated Sugar
  • Ground Cinnamon
  • Vanilla Extract- I love using pure vanilla extract!
  • Salt
  • Butter
  • Maple Syrup
  • Powdered Sugar, optional
  • Cooking spray, optional

INGREDIENT NOTES:

  • Bread: Day-old or slightly stale bread works best because it absorbs the egg mixture without becoming too soggy. You can also use French bread or even croissants for extra richness.
  • Whole Milk: Adds creaminess to the batter. You can substitute it with heavy cream for a richer texture.

STEP 1: In a large, shallow bowl, whisk together eggs, cup of milk, sugar, cinnamon, vanilla extract, and salt until well combined.

STEP 2: Preheat a large non-stick skillet or griddle over medium heat.

STEP 3: Dip each slice of bread into the egg mixture, allowing it to soak for about 10 seconds on each side. Let excess drip off.

STEP 4: Melt 1 tablespoon of butter in the preheated skillet, or hot griddle; Cook 2 slices of the soaked bread for about 2-3 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and crispy. Repeat with remaining slices, adding 1 tablespoon of butter to the pan for each batch.

STEP 5: Serve hot, dusted with powdered sugar if desired, and drizzled with warm maple syrup.

Storage and Reheating

Storage: Store leftovers in the refrigerator in an airtight container. It can be kept for up to 2 days.

Reheating: Reheat in a toaster oven or in a skillet over medium heat for a few minutes until warmed through.

Freezing: After cooking, let the French toast cool completely. Place slices on a baking sheet to freeze for about an hour, then transfer them to an airtight container or freezer bag. Reheat in a toaster oven or skillet.

  • Cinnamon Sugar: Sprinkle cinnamon sugar over the top while it’s hot for a sweet crunch.

SUBSTITUTIONS:

  • Bread: Use brioche or challah bread for a richer flavor, or swap for gluten-free bread if needed.
  • Milk: Substitute the whole milk with half and half or heavy cream.

Notes

Expert Tip:
To prevent cinnamon from concentrating and burning at the bottom, make sure to thoroughly mix the cinnamon into the egg mixture and cook your French toast on medium-low heat. This ensures even flavor distribution and a perfectly golden, flavorful finish without any burnt spots.
