These Applesauce Fritters are a quick and easy way to enjoy a classic treat. Shaped into golden, crispy balls with soft apple-filled centers, then rolled in cinnamon sugar for the perfect sweet finish!
In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, and salt.
In a separate bowl, combine eggs, applesauce, milk, melted butter, and vanilla extract.
Add wet ingredients to dry ingredients, stirring just until combined. Fold in diced apples. Batter will be thick.
In a shallow dish, mix the cinnamon and sugar together until evenly combined.
Heat 2 inches of oil in a deep heavy pot or Dutch oven to 360°F.
Drop batter by rounded half tablespoonfuls into hot oil, working in batches of 4-5 fritters at a time. Fry for 2-3 minutes per side until deep golden brown. (If you prefer a different shape, just smooth the "balls" out with the back of a spoon, adjust the cooking time if alot thinner).
Remove fritters with a slotted spoon and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
While still warm, roll each fritter in the cinnamon sugar mixture, coating them completely.
Serve warm.
Notes
NOTE: I’ve tried frying at 350°F and 370°F, but 360°F works best overall. If you’re using a 1-tablespoon scoop for the fritters, drop the oil temperature to 350°F to give them more time to cook through and ensure they’re done on the inside.
Pro Tip:
I used a 1/2-tablespoon scoop for small fritters, but you can also try making them larger, around 1-inch scoops. Just note that larger fritters will need an extra minute or two of cooking time to cook through fully. Keep an eye on the frying time for best results!
