Cottage Pie is comfort food at its best. This classic dish is made with a savory ground beef filling cooked in gravy, topped with creamy mashed potatoes, and baked until golden. It’s one of those cozy dinners that’s perfect when you want something hearty and filling.
In large skillet, cook ground beef over medium-high heat 8 to 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until thoroughly cooked; drain. Remove beef from skillet.2 pounds ground beef.
In same skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Cook onion in butter about 5 minutes, stirring frequently, until softened.3 tablespoons butter,1 large onion.
Sprinkle flour over onion mixture; stir well. Cook and stir 2 minutes.3 tablespoons flour.
Gradually stir in beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, ketchup, thyme and salt, pepper, and paprika. Heat to boiling, stirring constantly.1 1/2 cups beef broth,3 tablespoons ketchup,2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce,1 teaspoon dried thyme,1 teaspoon garlic powder,1 teaspoon salt,1/4 teaspoon black pepper,1 teaspoon paprika.
Return beef to skillet. Stir in frozen vegetables. Reduce heat to low; simmer 5 to 8 minutes, stirring occasionally, until mixture is thickened. Season to taste with salt and pepper.2 cups frozen mixed vegetables.
Spoon beef mixture into ungreased 13x9-inch baking dish. Spread mashed potatoes evenly over beef. Sprinkle with cheese.4-6 cups prepared mashed potatoes.
Bake 25 to 30 minutes or until potatoes are golden brown and beef mixture is bubbly around edges.
Notes
Pro Tip: For extra crispy, golden potatoes on top, run the dish under the broiler for the last 2-3 minutes of baking. Also you can add some shredded cheddar cheese or parmesan cheese on top of the potatoes to make it cheesy!
