Instructions
In a large skillet, over medium heat, cook the ground beef and onion, until the ground beef turns brown; drain the excess fat.
Add the diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, bay leaves, garlic powder, oregano, sugar, salt, and pepper to the pot. Stir to combine.
Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to medium-low and let it simmer for 30 minutes. Remove and discard the bay leaves.
Add the Parmesan cheese to the pot and stir until it is well mixed. Then add the fresh basil, or dried basil if using, and continue cooking over low heat for an additional 5 minutes.
Remove the pot from the heat.
