Ingredient Notes:

  • Cream Cheese: Make sure it’s completely softened to room temperature for the smoothest texture and smooth consistency.
  • Pumpkin Puree: Use pure canned pumpkin puree or a can of pumpkin puree, not pumpkin pie filling which already has spices added.
  • Heavy Cream: This gets whipped to create that light, fluffy texture that makes this dip so special and creates the perfect creamy base.

How to make pumpkin dip step-by-step:

Check out the quick visual guides below. For full instructions and ingredients, see the printable recipe card at the end.

Step 1: In a large mixing bowl, beat softened cream cheese with an electric mixer or hand mixer until smooth and fluffy, about 2 minutes.

Step 2: Add pumpkin puree, powdered sugar, brown sugar, vanilla, pumpkin pie spice, and salt. Beat at medium speed until well combined.

Step 3: In a separate bowl, whip heavy cream until stiff peaks form.

Step 4: Gently fold whipped cream into pumpkin mixture until just combined.

Step 5: Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes before serving to allow flavors to blend.

Step 6: Transfer to a serving bowl and serve with cinnamon graham crackers, apple slices, or vanilla wafer cookies.

PRO TIP:

Don’t over mix when folding in the whipped cream! Gentle folding motions will keep the dip light and airy. Overmixing will deflate the whipped cream and make the dip dense. Also, for the smooth texture you want, make sure your cream cheese is completely softened first.

Storage and Reheating:

Storage: Store leftovers in the refrigerator in an airtight container. It can be kept for up to 3-4 days. The dip may separate slightly, just give it a gentle stir before serving. Leftover dip tastes great the next day!

Reheating: This dip is served cold, so no reheating needed! Perfect for an after-school snack too.

Freezing: Not recommended as the texture will change when thawed.

Additions and Substitutions:

ADDITIONS:

  • Toppings: Sprinkle with extra pumpkin pie spice, ground cinnamon, or mini chocolate chips before serving.
  • Mix-ins: Try adding mini marshmallows, chopped pecans, or toffee bits for extra texture.
  • Spices: Add a pinch of ground ginger, or ground nutmeg for more complex spice flavors.
  • Extra Touch: Going the extra mile with a drizzle of caramel sauce or maple syrup adds incredible flavor.

SUBSTITUTIONS:

  • Cream Cheese: Mascarpone cheese or greek yogurt can be used for different flavors and textures.
  • Heavy Cream: You can use Cool Whip instead of whipping your own cream for convenience.
  • Sugars: Try all brown sugar or regular sugar for different sweetness levels with the right amount of sweetness.
  • Pumpkin: Sweet potatoes can create a different but delicious fall flavor profile.

FAQs about this Pumpkin Pie Dip:

Can pumpkin dip be made ahead of time?

Yes! This dip actually tastes better after chilling for a few hours or overnight. The flavors have more time to blend together. You can make it up to 2 days ahead and store covered in the refrigerator. Cover with plastic wrap, or in a covered bowl.

What are the different variations of pumpkin dip?

You can make it lighter by using Cool Whip instead of heavy cream, add sour cream for tanginess, or try a savory pumpkin dip with roasted garlic. Some people also add vanilla pudding mix for extra sweetness or make it in a food processor for ultra-smooth results.

Can I use fresh pumpkin instead of canned?

Yes, but canned pumpkin puree gives more consistent results. If using fresh, roast pie pumpkins, puree until smooth, and drain excess moisture with paper towels to avoid a watery dip.

What can I serve with pumpkin dip?

Gingersnap cookies, apple slices, pear slices, vanilla wafer cookies, cinnamon graham crackers, or even pretzel crisps all work wonderfully as favorite dippers. Green apples are especially delicious!

You can even serve it with tortilla chips for a fun twist, and it’s a wonderful addition to any halloween party or game day spread. If you love all things pumpkin, you should also check out my pumpkin chocolate chip cookies and pumpkin muffins for more fall treats!
