I used to be nervous about making jalapeño recipes, but after I tried this one, it was love at first bite! The combination of tart cranberries, a little spicy flavors from jalapeno peppers, and cream cheese is so good.

Now I make this every year during the holiday season because it’s always the first thing to disappear at parties. This cranberry jalapeño dip recipe tastes just like the Costco version but costs way less. It’s been one of my best appetizers for a long time.

This easy dip recipe comes together fast with simple ingredients. The creamy dip turns this beautiful pink color with little cranberry flecks throughout. It’s such a stunning presentation!

You’ll need the following ingredients to make Cranberry Jalapeño Dip:

  • Lime juice
  • Salt
  • Cream cheese (2 blocks), softened
  • Sour cream

Ingredient Notes for this Cranberry Dip:

  • Cranberries: Must be fresh, not frozen or dried. Fresh cranberries are usually available October through December. You can add extra cranberries if you want more tartness.
  • Jalapeños: Remove the seeds and membranes for less heat (jalapeño peppers vary in spiciness). Leave some seeds in if you want more spicy flavors.
  • Cream Cheese: Use softened cream cheese at room temperature so it mixes smoothly. Light cream cheese works as a great option for fewer calories, though it won’t be quite as rich. This recipe uses only cream cheese, no other cheese types.
  • Lime Juice: Fresh lime juice tastes best. Lemon juice can substitute but gives a different flavor.
  • Cilantro: Fresh cilantro is key for that authentic flavor.

How to Make Cranberry Jalapeno Dip Step-by-Step:

Check out the quick visual guides below. For full instructions and ingredients, see the printable recipe card at the end.

Step 1: Pulse the cranberries in a food processor until finely chopped but not mushy. Transfer to a large bowl.

Step 2: Add the sugar, jalapeños, cilantro, lime juice, and salt to the cranberries. Stir well to combine.

Step 3: Drain away any excess pooling liquid from the cranberry mixture, but do not press it. You can also use paper towels to soak up excess juice.

Step 4: In a separate bowl, beat the cream cheese and sour cream with a hand mixer until smooth and fluffy.

Step 5: Add the cranberry mixture to the cream cheese mixture and stir gently to combine.

Step 6: Transfer the entire mixture to the food processor and pulse until the dip becomes creamy, smooth, and lightly pink with tiny cranberry flecks.

Step 7: Transfer to a serving bowl, cover, and refrigerate for 3 hours.

Step 8: Serve with crackers or tortilla chips, We love buttery crackers like Ritz, pretzel chips, or your favorite crackers all work great!

*Note: You can also fix this recipe with the cranberry mixture on top of the cream cheese layer. My oldest son prefers it this way, and my other sons like the smooth dip. So either way you fix it, this dip is so yummy!

PRO TIPS:

Don’t skip the chilling time! The dip needs at least 3 hours in the fridge for the flavors to blend and for it to firm up to the right consistency. It’s actually even better the next day!

Also, chopping the cranberries first in the food processor releases their juices, which you can drain off in Step 3. If you blend everything together at once, you can’t drain that excess liquid and the dip will be watery. And make sure to drain that pooled liquid well, a little bit is fine, but drain most of it for the best texture!

Storage and Reheating:

Storage: Store leftover dip in the refrigerator in an airtight container for up to 3-4 days.

Reheating: This dip is served cold, no reheating needed!

Freezing: Not recommended. The cream cheese texture changes when frozen and thawed.

Additions and Substitutions:

ADDITIONS:

  • Green Onions: Add sliced green onions for extra flavor.
  • Orange Zest: A little orange zest or orange juice adds brightness.
  • Pecans: Sprinkle chopped pecans on the top of the cream cheese dip before serving.
  • Extra Heat: Add more jalapeños or leave some seeds in for more spicy flavors.

SUBSTITUTIONS:

  • Cream Cheese: Goat cheese mixed with cream cheese gives a tangy twist, or use light cream cheese for fewer calories.
  • Sour Cream: Greek yogurt can substitute for sour cream.
  • Sugar: You can reduce the sugar slightly if you prefer less sweetness, but the cranberries are very tart.
  • Cilantro: If you hate cilantro, try fresh parsley instead (though it won’t taste exactly the same).

FAQs about this Cream Cheese Cranberry Jalapeno Dip:

My dip is too watery. What happened? You probably didn’t drain enough liquid from the cranberry mixture in Step 3. Let it sit longer and use a fine mesh strainer to drain more liquid next time.

Can I use frozen cranberries? Fresh cranberries work best, but if you must use frozen, thaw them completely and drain very well before using.

How spicy is this dip? With seeded jalapeños, it has a mild heat. It’s not overwhelming. If you like a little kick, just adjust the jalapeños to your preference.

Why does it need to chill for 3 hours? The chilling time helps the dip firm up and lets all the flavors blend together. It’s worth the wait!

Is this similar to cranberry salsa? This is creamier than cranberry salsa because of the cream cheese, but it has similar fresh, bright flavors. It’s like a cross between cranberry salsa and cream cheese dips.

Can I use this like cranberry sauce? It’s different from traditional sweet cranberry sauce, but you could use it as a spread on turkey sandwiches!

What can I serve with this Jalapeno Cranberry Dip?

This perfect holiday appetizer is delicious with buttery crackers like Ritz crackers, Wheat Thins, pretzel chips, pita chips, or tortilla chips. It’s also delicious spread on turkey sandwiches or served on a cheese board!
