Recipe Ingredients

You’ll need the following ingredients to make this amazing Rice Recipe:

  • Long-grain white rice (uncooked rice)
  • Butter (1 cup of butter)
  • Progresso French onion soup (this is NOT a can of condensed French Onion Soup)
A bowl of long-grain rice, a stick of butter, and a can of French onion soup arranged on a light countertop, each labeled with its name.

Ingredient Notes:

  • Long-Grain Rice: Long-grained white rice works best as it stays fluffy and doesn’t get mushy during the longer baking time. You could also use jasmine rice or brown rice, though cooking times may vary. Skip the instant rice for this recipe.
  • Salted Butter: Using a full stick creates that signature delicious rice flavor that makes this dish so special. If you prefer less butter, you can reduce it, but honestly, why would you?
  • French Onion Soup: The canned soup provides incredible flavor and the perfect amount of liquid. You could substitute with beef consommé mixed with onion soup mix, beef consomme, or even low-sodium beef broth with seasonings.

STEP 7: Remove the foil and bake 15-20 more minutes, uncovered, until the top of the rice is lightly golden and the rice is fully tender.

STEP 8: Let stand covered for 5 minutes, then fluff with a fork.

STEP 9: Garnish with fresh chives and serve hot.

NOTE: Make sure to cover tightly with aluminum foil – no gaps or loose edges! This creates a steam chamber that cooks the rice perfectly. You don’t want crunchy undercooked rice!

PRO TIP:

This low maintenance recipe is perfect for beginners! Make sure to stir the rice thoroughly with the melted butter before adding the soup. This ensures every grain gets coated and you’ll achieve the best texture possible!

Storage and Reheating:

Storage: Store leftovers in the refrigerator in an airtight container. It can be kept for up to 2-3 days.

Reheating: When reheating leftover rice, add a splash of water or broth to loosen if dry. Reheat gently on the stove top or in the microwave until thoroughly warmed.

Freezing: Place the rice in a freezer-safe container and freeze for up to 3 months. Reheat gently in a skillet over medium heat, adding a splash of water or broth if needed.

Additions and Substitutions:

ADDITIONS:

  • Vegetables: Add finely chopped mushrooms when stirring in the rice for extra texture and stronger flavor.
  • Protein: Add cooked rotisserie chicken to make it a complete meal perfect for main dishes.
  • Soup Variations: Try cream of mushroom soup or vegetable broth for different flavor profiles.

SUBSTITUTIONS:

  • Rice Options: While we love long grain rice, you can experiment with other varieties, though avoid using a rice cooker for this particular recipe.
  • Soup: If you want low sodium options, look for reduced-sodium versions of your favorite soups.
  • Butter: You could use pats of butter instead of one whole stick, but the magic really happens with the full amount.

FAQs about this Oven Baked Rice:

Why do I need to cover with aluminum foil?

The aluminum foil traps steam during the first part of baking, which helps the rice cook evenly and absorb all the liquid. Removing it for the last 15 minutes allows the top of the rice to get that beautiful golden color.

Why does my rice stick to the bottom of the dish?

Make sure to use cooking spray and stir the rice well with the melted butter before adding the soup. This coats every grain and prevents sticking.

Can I double this recipe for a crowd?

Absolutely! Just use a larger baking dish and keep the same cooking times. Perfect for potluck dinners or special occasions.

Is this recipe Gluten-free?
