HOW TO MAKE CHERRY TURNOVERS STEP-BY-STEP:

Check out the quick visual guides below. For full instructions and ingredients, see the printable recipe card at the end.

Step 1: Preheat oven to 400°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Step 2: Unfold the sheets of puff pastry on a lightly floured surface. Use a lightly floured rolling pin, or your hands, to gently smooth out any creases. Cut each sheet of puff pastry into 4 equal squares to form the square shape.

Step 3: In a small mixing bowl, whisk together the egg and tablespoon of water to make an egg wash.

Step 4: Spoon about 2 tablespoons of the canned cherry pie filling into the center of each square.

Step 5: Brush the edges of the puff pastry with the egg wash. Fold each square diagonally into a small triangle, pressing the edges firmly with a fork to seal.

Six-step process of making cherry turnovers: Egg in a bowl, beaten egg, puff pastry sheets cut into squares, cherry filling on pastry squares, folding pastry over filling, crimped edges with a fork.

Step 6: Place turnovers on the prepared baking sheet. Use a sharp knife to cut small slits into the tops of the turnoversto allow steam to escape. Brush the tops of the turnovers with the egg wash and sprinkle with sugar for a sweet crunch.

Step 7: Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the turnovers are golden brown with flaky layers. Remove from the oven and let cool on a wire rack.

Step 8: While the turnovers cool, make the vanilla glaze by whisking together powdered sugar, tablespoon of milk, and vanilla extract until smooth.

Step 9: Drizzle the glaze over the turnovers after they have cooled completely.

PRO TIP:

For a flakier crust, keep the puff pastry cold before baking. Work quickly on a lightly floured surface to maintain its texture.

Storage and Reheating

Storage: Keep turnovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days or in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.

Reheating: Warm in the oven at 350°F for 5-7 minutes or in the air fryer for 2-3 minutes until crisp.

Freezing: Freeze unbaked turnovers on a parchment-lined baking sheet, then transfer to a freezer-safe bag. Bake directly from frozen, adding 5-7 minutes to the baking time.

Additions & Substitutions

ADDITIONS:

  • Fresh Cherries: Use a medium saucepan to cook fresh cherries with brown sugar and a splash of lemon juice for a homemade cherry mixture.
  • Cream Cheese: Add a dollop of cream cheese alongside the cherry filling for a rich twist.

SUBSTITUTIONS:

  • Coarse Sugar:
Substitute with granulated sugar if coarse sugar isn’t available, or simply omit it.
  • Puff Pastry: Substitute with phyllo dough or crescent rolls for a different texture.
