HOW TO MAKE TURTLE BROWNIES STEP-BY-STEP:
Check out the quick visual guides below. For full instructions and ingredients, see the printable recipe card at the end.
Step 1: Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease an 8×8-inch baking dish or line it with parchment paper for easier removal.
Step 2: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the granulated sugar and melted butter until smooth. Add the eggs and vanilla extract, whisking until fully combined.
Step 3: Sift in the unsweetened cocoa powder, all-purpose flour, and salt. Stir until just combined, then fold in the chocolate chips.
Step 4: Spread the brownie batter evenly into the prepared baking dish. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out with a few moist crumbs. Let the brownies cool completely.
Step 5: In a small saucepan over low heat, melt the caramels with the heavy cream, stirring constantly until smooth. Pour the caramel mixture evenly over the cooled brownies.
Step 6: Sprinkle the pecan halves evenly over the caramel layer.
Step 7: Melt the remaining chocolate chips in a microwave-safe bowl, heating in 15-second intervals and stirring between each interval until smooth. Drizzle the melted chocolate over the caramel and pecans.
Step 8: Allow the brownies to set at room temperature or refrigerate until firm. Cut into 9 large squares and serve.
PRO TIP:
Let the brownies sit for a few hours or overnight to set the caramel, then use a sharp knife for clean, perfect slices!
Storage and Reheating
Storage: Wrap brownies tightly in plastic wrap or keep them in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
Reheating: Warm individual brownies in the microwave for 10-15 seconds for a gooey texture. This takes the brownies to another level, trust me on this one!
Freezing: Wrap individual squares in plastic wrap, place in a freezer safe Ziploc bag, and freeze for up to 3 months. Thaw at room temperature before serving.
Additions & Substitutions
ADDITIONS:
- Add a layer of peanut butter between the brownie layer and caramel topping for a twist.
- Sprinkle sea salt on the caramel for a salted caramel variation.
SUBSTITUTIONS:
- Butter: Substitute with margarine or coconut oil for a slightly different flavor.
- Semi-sweet chocolate chips: Use milk chocolate or dark chocolate chips based on your preference.
- Pecans: Replace with walnuts or almonds for a different nutty texture.
