These Sausage Balls take Red Lobster biscuits to a whole new level by combining them with savory sausage and cheese for the best sausage balls you’ll ever make! I usually just mix them by hand, but you can  Use a paddle attachment in the bowl of a stand mixer to blend the sausage ball mixture quickly and evenly. Bake on a lined baking sheet in a preheated oven to avoid extra grease, and let them cool on paper towels for the best results. For a twist, try a sausage variety like spicy sausage or even mix in a little bit of red pepper flakes. Perfect for Christmas morning, parties, or any time you need an easy appetizer!

Recipe Ingredients

You’ll need the following ingredients to make these amazing Sausage Cheese Balls:

  • Breakfast sausage- I used mild, but use hot sausage for a little kick.
  • Red Lobster Biscuit Mix
  • Shredded Cheddar cheese- I like to use sharp cheddar cheese, but use your favorite type.
  • Cream cheese
  • Milk
  • Butter

*NOTE: You’ll see I used a gluten free mix to make Gluten Free Sausage Balls. The mix doesn’t matter, I’ve made it with the regular mix and the ingredients are the same! I like to try both methods before I post recipes, I just had a gf mix the day I took the pics!

Ingredients for a cheesy sausage dish are arranged on a gray surface. Items include Red Lobster biscuit mix, cheddar cheese, cream cheese cubes, sausage, butter, and milk. Each item is labeled with text.

INGREDIENT NOTES:

  • Red Lobster Biscuit Mix: Provides that signature cheesy, garlicky flavor for the cheddar bay sausage ball recipe.
  • Ground breakfast sausage: Choose regular breakfast sausage, mild sausage, or hot sausage depending on your personal preference.
  • Shredded cheddar cheese: Adds a gooey, cheesy element to these classic sausage balls. I like to shred my own cheese, but store bough works fine too.

HOW TO MAKE CHEDDAR BAY SAUSAGE BALLS STEP-BY-STEP:

Check out the quick visual guides below. For full instructions and ingredients, see the printable recipe card at the end.

STEP 1:

Step 1: Preheat the oven to 375°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Step 2: In a large mixing bowl, combine the biscuit mix (excluding the seasoning packet), ground sausage, cheddar cheese, cream cheese, and milk. Mix thoroughly until all ingredients are fully combined.

Step 3: Roll the mixture into 1-inch balls and place them on the prepared baking sheet, leaving about 1 inch of space between each ball.

Step 4: Bake the sausage balls for 18-20 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through.

Step-by-step process of making meatballs: mixing ground meat with shredded cheese and onions, forming mixture into balls, arranging on a baking sheet, making a yellow glaze in a bowl, and freshly baked meatballs on a tray.

Step 5: While the sausage balls are baking, mix the melted butter with the seasoning packet from the biscuit mix to create the seasoned butter.

Step 6: Remove the sausage balls from the oven and immediately brush them with the seasoned butter.

Step 7: Serve warm with your favorite dipping sauce, like ranch dressing, BBQ sauce, or my personal favorite-ketchup!

Storage and Reheating

Storage: Store leftovers in the refrigerator in an airtight container. It can be kept for up to 3 days.

Reheating: Warm in a 350°F oven for 5-7 minutes, air fryer for 3-5 minutes,  or microwave until heated through.

Freezing: Freeze uncooked sausage balls on a baking sheet, then transfer to a freezer-safe bag. Bake directly from frozen, adding 3-5 minutes to the cooking time.

Additions & Substitutions

ADDITIONS:

  • Mix in 1/4 cup finely diced jalapeños for a spicy kick.
  • Add a teaspoon of fresh parsley to the seasoning butter for a fresh, herby touch.

SUBSTITUTIONS:

  • Ground sausage: Use turkey sausage for a lighter option, or Hot Italian sausage for a little spice!
  • Cheddar cheese: Swap with Colby Jack or Pepper Jack cheese for a twist.

Check that the internal temperature of the sausage balls reaches 160°F using a kitchen thermometer.
